Can I use the badge for area or perimeter monitoring rather than personal monitoring?

Yes. You can clip the badge anywhere there might be exposure as long as the temperature range falls between -5° to 40°C (27°F to 104°F) and the relative humidity is in the range 15% to 80%. Always ensure the open end of the badge is not blocked by other objects and is pointing towards the ground so that nothing can fall into the opening to block the air flow into the badge, and keep the badge out of direct sunlight.

Can I wear the badge in the rain?

A short exposure to rain will not harm the badge as long as the rain drops do not block the inlet of the badge. However, extended exposure will lead to inaccurate results because the relative humidity will be above the 80% limit for accurate readings.

How do I determine my exposure level?

First, check your employer’s policy to determine whether you are authorized to measure exposure levels yourself or may only have specifically authorized personnel (e.g. a Safety Officer) measure your exposure. If you are authorized, please refer to the user manual for determining exposure with the Digital Reader or Pocket Viewer.

Can I use the badge for indoor and outdoor monitoring?

Yes, you can use the badge for indoor and outdoor monitoring of hydrogen sulfide exposure, but you should keep it out of direct sunlight. The badge is designed to measure exposure levels when the temperature is in the range -5° to 40°C (23 to 104°F) and relative humidity is 15% to 80%.

I used the badge during my work shift but I can’t measure the exposure until tomorrow. How should I store the badge in the meantime?

For maximum accuracy, badges are best read immediately after use. If you must store the badge, place it back in its original pouch, open-end first, fold the pouch end over a few times, tape the pouch closed, and store in the refrigerator. When ready to read the badge, let it equilibrate to ambient temperature before opening the pouch and inserting the sensor into the pocket viewer or digital reader.

How long can I wear the badge?

You can wear the badge continuously for up to 12 hours. However, the badge is designed to measure up to a maximum 400 ppm-hr. integrated exposure. If the H2S concentration in the environment is excessively high, the badge can saturate before 12 hours. For example, if the concentration of hydrogen sulfide gas is constant at 100 ppm, then the badge will saturate in 4 hours. Use the Pocket Viewer to check your exposure frequently if you are concerned the hydrogen sulfide concentration may be excessively high.

How do I use the badge to monitor my exposure?

Remove the pouch from the refrigerator and let it equilibrate to ambient temperature for 15 min before opening the pouch.

When you are ready to monitor exposure, tear the pouch along the notch, and remove the badge. Keep the pouch for potential use later. Clip the badge to your clothing as close to your breathing zone as possible (e.g. on your shirt collar). This way, the badge will be exposed to the same air you breathe.

Make sure the open end of the badge is not blocked by other objects and is pointing towards the ground so that nothing can fall into the opening to block the air flow into the badge.
